Hi, I’m Tom - a photographer and educator from Blackwood, South Wales, now based in Pontywaun not far from Newport and Cardiff. I’ve been making images for 25 years, and a lifelong love of photobooks and photographic history (especially here in Wales) sits at the centre of my practice.
cysgod y mynydd / shadow of the mountain
My current project consists of three parts. It began in 2019 when I started to walk the area, making landscape images and observations of the place where I live. Over time I built a large body of work, then realised I needed to bring people into the frame.
Since 2023, through a research degree, I have added a portrait chapter to do exactly that. I am developing a people centred approach based on conversation, consent, and patience. Technically I am confident, and I am refining how I listen, collaborate, and make portraits that deepen the sense of place.
Alongside this runs the third component, the mountain that has held my attention throughout. The mountain is the backdrop to many of the photographs. Mynydd y Lan and its winter shadow act as a steady motif for the work. In 2022 I began studying it more closely, using a telephoto lens to isolate sections to examine the form that dominates my horizon.
